How well do you understand the EU POPs Regulation?

POPs stand for Persistent Organic Pollutants. These are organic compounds that resist environmental degradation through chemical, biological, and photolytic processes. They are persistent in the environment and can travel long distances through air and water currents. Many POPs are also bioaccumulative, meaning they accumulate in living organisms, posing serious health risks to wildlife and humans alike.

The substances considered POPs include certain pesticides (such as DDT), industrial chemicals (such as PCBs - polychlorinated biphenyls), and unintentional by-products of industrial processes (like dioxins and furans). POPs have been identified as major pollutants because of their detrimental effects on the environment and human health, which has prompted international efforts to control and minimize their use and manufacture.

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the EU is a global environmental agreement that aims to prevent POPs from affecting human health and the environment by banning, eliminating as soon as possible, or regulating the production, distribution, and use of these substances.

For non-compliant entities, the appropriate and necessary penalties will be taken into account by Member States to ensure that the regulation is implemented.

How can you locate the POPs substances in your product? To guarantee your products meet the POPs regulation and avoid unnecessary penalties, let us take this responsibility for you.

Are you familiar with the concept of Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)?

The term "PCF" refers to "Product Carbon Footprint," a measure that quantifies the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly and indirectly by a product throughout its entire lifecycle. This includes emissions from raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation, use phase, and disposal or recycling. PCF is typically expressed in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2e).

By calculating the PCF, companies can identify areas where emissions can be reduced, set emission reduction targets, and make more informed decisions regarding sustainable practices and product design.

Minimizing environmental footprints is becoming a global priority, making the reduction of PCF crucial. Here are some advantages of reducing PCF:

In the upcoming IMDS Release 15.0, a new reporting functionality developed by the IMDS Steering Committee in collaboration with supplier groups AIAG, CLEPA, and JAPIA will be integrated into the IMDS system. It will enable the reporting of a product's PCF at the material, semi-component, and component levels (where possible).

The purpose of this function is to promote the reporting and reduction of PCF throughout the entire automotive supply chain.

However, the PCF calculation will not be included in IMDS. Depending on the complexity of your product, several additional data sources may be needed.

Therefore, understanding PCF is the first step in addressing this important topic. Subsequently, accurately calculating PCF is encouraged for all companies in the automotive supply chain to be prepared for future customer requirements. Finally, staying up to date with environmental regulations is essential for maintaining precise PCF calculations.

Responding to the Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR)

A biocidal product is a product with an active substance that is intended to destroy, deter, render harmless, prevent the action of, or otherwise exert a controlling effect on harmful or undesired organisms.

If a material contains a biocide component that remains in the finished product, how can you comply with the Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR)?

First, identify whether your product has biocidal properties. You can obtain biocidal information directly from the manufacturer. Next, complete all regulatory information to receive the green icon.

If your IMDS account does not allow you to modify BPR queries, you need to request access privileges from your admin company.

In addition to the above steps, consider the following BPR scenarios to meet the green icon requirements:

* When will the function be required?

* Which product type (PT 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, or 13) do your materials belong to?

* Which material classification matches the product type?

* Do you need to answer the function for all substances used as biocides in the final product?

* What should you do if you encounter a red/yellow icon?

If you want to become an expert in this function or other basic/advanced functions in IMDS, why not attend our upcoming training course.

Conflict Mineral Service: Ensure Compliance, Protect Your Market

Did you know that conflict minerals declaration is mandatory for publicly traded companies in the United States? These companies must report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) if their products contain tantalum, tin, tungsten, or gold (3TG) sourced from mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or neighbouring countries.

To help prevent humanitarian crises, all companies are encouraged to comply with the Dodd-Frank Act. This law doesn't ban the use of minerals from the region but requires companies to report their usage on Form SD, which must be filed with the SEC and made public on their websites.

Non-compliance can lead to severe consequences, including facing green environment regulations and the worst-case scenario—being barred from entering target markets.

Most conflict mineral regulations mandate corporations to submit an annual report on their compliance. This means suppliers need to fill out a new Conflict Mineral Reporting Template (CMRT) each year before the reporting date. In the U.S., the standard reporting date is May 31st, although some industries may have different deadlines or additional global restrictions on conflict minerals. Stay ahead by discussing your needs with your customers and ensuring you meet their expectations.

Contact us now to ensure your products remain compliant with these regulations. Our goal is to assist you from start to finish, providing full CM services—from obtaining and monitoring crucial downstream 3TG mineral information from suppliers to completing the upstream SD form.

IMDS Service: Elevate Your Expertise!

Have you familiarized yourself with the IMDS system yet? Ready to create a new MDS for your product but stuck on issues like BOM (Bill of Material), supplier material information, global regulations on hazardous substances, or advanced IMDS functions?

Confused about the difference between flat BOM (FBOM) and structural BOM? Unsure which type applies to IMDS declarations or when specific FBOM cases are allowed?

In IMDS data, suppliers should disclose all materials following structural BOM details right down to the plating/coating surface. The Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik (ZVO) [10216], instrumental in developing surface treatments, has committed to maintaining these treatments. However, note that in newsletter 63, the ZVO supplier will be removed from the list of Standard Companies on July 5, 2024, due to their compliance with IMDS REC 001 rules.

Join our monthly training course and master the art of creating and declaring precise IMDS data for every surface treatment material!
